Best Pacific Northwest Drives – Maryhill Loops Road

This was an experimental road to prove that roads could be run along the Columbia River. Built in 1911 it was the first asphalt road in the state. Now owned by the Maryhill Museum of Art, it is now only open to pedestrians when not rented to car, bike or longboard clubs. I got to visit as part of the 2021 Northwest Express Rally and I thought it was a ton more fun than driving around a track. As an experiment it was intended to prove that roads could be built up steep grades and around really twisty terrain. Great driving. I averaged 4.7mpg combined up and down. Yikes. But highly recommended if you have or can find a club that is going. I’ll let pictures and video speak for themselves.

Twisty!

Really twisty!

This rally ended with a visit to the LeMay Museum in Tacoma, which is a mecca for gearheads. Also well worth a visit. Exhibits - America's Car Museum (americascarmuseum.org)
